That Catchy Tune Can Cost You!
We've all seen the commercials with the catchy tunes that we can't get out of our heads and received the relentless email (spam) telling us we can get our credit report for free only to find out the only thing catchy is the fine print. Then it's too late, you've been charged and it's money gone and a pain to get it back, if you even can! But there is something these guys don't want you to know. You really can get your credit reports for free. No tricks, no fine print! 100% legit and it's the law!
One way is not all that fun. If you have applied for credit and been denied, you will have a short window of time in which you can write and request a copy showing you the items which prompted the creditor not to extend you credit. However, it is always a good idea to know what is on the three major credit reports before you apply and get turned down. You could have anything from items which are not yours to debts from many decades ago which were reported wrong to even credit cards in your name which you never even knew existed. Many people are surprised to find out exactly what IS on there....don't be one of those people. Knowing what exactly is out there is the first step to building a better financial future.
AnnualCreditReport.com (https://www.annualcreditreport.com) is a site which is NOT associated with any of the supposed "free credit report" offers you receive. It is federal law that you can acquire your free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion (https://www.annualcreditreport.com) and this is the web site where you are allowed to do this and print out your reports right there on the spot. Now, don't think everything on the site is free. They will try to tempt you with offers, and some of them aren't bad, but if you just want your credit reports, stick to your guns and say no to all the other offers. If you are uncomfortable with requesting them on line, you can also call or write them once a year to receive your reports. Once you know what's on the reports, you can control your financial wellbeing and you'll be singing a happier tune!
