If two wrongs don't make a right, try three!
According to a study published by the Marketing Science Institute, at least half of all shoppers are estimated to make three or four trips a week to the grocery store. This doesn't feel like much since we are just picking up those few items we absolutely have to have.....and that bag of chips, after all, they are on sale....Ah, Man! What smells so good in the Deli? Oh, look Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, that will hold off starvation until I get home!
You've just spent $10 you didn't plan on spending. And we do this 3 to 4 times a week! Let's do the math! (Don't worry, I've actually done it for you): If Mr. Happy Shopper goes to the store 3 times a week and spends and extra $10 each time on impulse buys, how much will he blow over the next full year?
Problem. $10 X 3 trips per week=$30; $30 a week X 52 weeks in the year=$1,560.00. Goodness forbid we make 4 trips a week or we would be another $560 in for a total of $2,080!!)
Solution. Make fewer trips to the store!! If you plan out your shopping trips carefully by calculating what your menu's and family's needs will be for the next 7 days, then deriving your once-a-week shopping list from that, you can actually cut your impulse buys by as much 75%. That means between $1,040 and $1,560 a year. Just think about walking into the grocery store and spending a $1000+ on junk food and things you don't need all in one trip..... Yea, that worked for me, too!
