Beware The Tricky Chickens In Your Path!

Running to the store for one or two items seems simple enough, but it can cost you more than you anticipate. Its not your fault if you aren't aware you are being manipulated to walk straight into a trap. So, the mission is clear, its time to control your own spending through greater knowledge. Another intentional grocery store design widely practiced for the sole purpose of romancing your money away from you starts as soon as you walk in the store. Next time you enter your local grocery store, take a moment to look around at the layout. You may notice a few things that many (if not all) major grocery stores will have in common......

Let's start with one of the most typical items people make a quick "store run" for, a gallon of milk. Ever notice it is in the very back of the store? (That is by design). Odds are, as you make your way through the door and head towards your "just one item", your route is immediately greeted by one of 3 incredibly tempting impulse items. Fresh flowers, the smell of fresh baked bread and/or the fresh wares in the deli & hot prepared food case. There is no mistake that most grocery stores have these layout commonalities. Sure, some of it is practical due to the location of the loading dock, etc., but most is carefully calculated in order to take advantage of a proven fact. Research has shown that, for "non-savvy" shoppers, 60 percent to 70 percent of what ends up in our carts is unplanned. You just have to be strong enough to avoid the temptations. Knowing its a trap may help. If it doesn't, grab some blinders and a clothespin for your nose and walk this way straight to your gallon of milk. Now turn and move swiftly to the front of the store.

Seems easy, but don't forget the traps are not over. If you are lucky enough to get just the intended item(s), and you now stand at the beginning of the "12 or fewer items" checkout lane, they know that you might be about to slip away without even one extra item. And there, where it should be obviously out of place, is that handy little, portable hot case full of fresh rotisserie chickens and barbecue ribs that seem to be calling you by name. Turn away, you are almost out of there. You must resist if you are to stay your course to save money. If all else fails and you find it hard to resist these temptations there is no reason to fret. A more simple plan is to take only cash and not any more than just what your item(s) will cost and you can avoid all the drama. (Not to mention people won't stare at you for wearing the latest in blinder and clothespin wear). Either way, you are forging your own path to a healthier financial future for you and your family, one small step at a time!
