Get Dumped On For Free

If you have ever mulched your flower beds or gardens, you know it can start at a couple bucks a bag and go up from there. But it can take a bunch of bags and the cost can be more than you expected! However, one of our readers, Texn2shy, unloaded a great tip on me by telling me how to cut the cost to FREE! (And Oh! How we all DO love free!!)

Next time you see the local utility company or municipal workers in your neighborhood dragging their wood chipper behind them while they trim the trees away from the power lines, simply stop and ask them if they can dump their next full load in your yard. We checked out a few different cities and utility companies and they all agreed that although not all companies will oblige you, many will. The explanation is that most of them have to drive to the dump to empty their chipper because it's not commercial grade mulch so, in fact, it actually costs to dump it. Its a win/win situation. You get free mulch (you don't even have to use gas to go get it) and they save a few bucks and the drive time to dump it! Not to mention, it's 100% natural so it provides nutrients to your soil when it breaks down and we already know the cost to replace it next year.

If you are not a mulcher, you might consider becoming one. Mulching within itself is a money saver. In the summer, mulch placed around your trees and in your beds will help keep moisture where it should be and saves your water bill from a bigger hit. It also provides great ground cover in your garden not only moisture retention underneath, but a dry landing on top for your fruits and veggies so that they don't rot as easily. In the winter, it provides a nice blanket to help keep heat at your plants roots so they are better protected to last through the winter.

Thanks again to, Texn2shy! :D Feel free to dump tips like that on me anytime!
