Saving Money Is Above You!

A quick way to start saving money seems to be above us. No, literally, look up. How many bulbs are in that ceiling fan? Do you really need ALL four? No, you really don't. Considering the average home has at least 50 light bulbs..... Yes! I can wait……. Welcome back. You doubted me didn’t you! Did you remember to count the porch lights, the ones in the garage, and over the stove? Those little buggers are hiding all over the place. But I digress. As I was saying, unscrewing just one bulb in your mulit-bulb fixtures can obviously save you money. But you can make the savings even larger by replacing the incandescent bulbs you keep with CFL bulbs (the little screwy florescent bulbs you can find almost anywhere these days).

Yes, CFL bulbs start off a tad bit dimmer (they reach full brightness slower than your regular bulbs) and are a bit more expensive, but they pay for themselves in a relatively short amount of time. They last about 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs so it’s not unusual for a CFL bulb to last for five years, and even as long as nine years.

Lowering your electric draw by a few light bulbs may not seem like much, but man, will the savings rack up over time. Just think long term. An Energy Star qualified-CFL bulb will pay for itself in six months and save at least $30 in electricity over it’s lifetime (multiply that by the number of blubs in your house). Hint: On the low end with the average of 50 blubs, that’s $1500.

AND as a bonus, replacing those incandescent bulbs with CFLs will help save our planet, too. Statistically, according to Energy Star, the United States could eliminate greenhouse gas emissions equal to 800,000 cars if each household in the country replaced just one incandescent bulb with a CFL bulb. Since CFL bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than a traditional light bulb, that means nationwide, a 60 percent to 70 percent decrease would save as much energy annually as the total amount of energy used by all the homes in Texas.

So take the time to be dimmer today, it’ll make you feel smarter!
And just a little richer.
